SNP committed

Jim Fairlie (Letters, 18 May) could never be accused of being anything other than totally committed to the restoration of Scotland's national sovereignty and he is quite right to equate independence with the return of the national self-confidence and dignity any country worthy of the name takes for granted.

However, if he and nationalists of his generation think that the current leadership of the SNP, Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon, are any less committed to the noble cause of winning back that dignity than they are, then I have to take issue with them.

Scotland has been under the yolk of the Union for more than 300 years and if Mr Fairlie and his pals believe that the people can be weaned off an association of that longevity overnight then they really are doing nothing more than whistling into the face of the prevailing wind.
