Your report, “West Dunbartonshire cat caught in snare loses leg” (31 October), illustrates the highly indiscriminate nature of snares, and the dangers these traps pose to animals.

This young cat had to have a leg amputated after being caught in an illegal snare which tightened to such an extent that her blood circulation was cut off.

As distressing as it is to think of a much-loved pet returning home in the same state as Buttons, a similar – if not worse – fate regularly befalls wild animals as a result of legal and illegal snares.

Buttons was able to return home and be treated, but wild animals, the intended victims of snares, do not have this option.

Surely the time has come to end this cruelty by banning snaring once and for all.
