Slavery shame

Quite rightly, publicity is being given to how Glasgow prospered because of slave labour in the sugar and tobacco plantations. What is less well known, and every bit as shocking, is that prior to Africans being kidnapped into slavery, thousands of Scots and Irish men, women and children were slaves in the Carolinas.

At one stage of the 25,000 working in the plantations, more than 21,000 of them were Scots or Irish. As a historian, Hugh Reilly (Perspective, 5 August) ought to have paid tribute to them as well.
