Skewed thinking

Although acknowledging a great need for something to be done to alleviate the volume of traffic using the rural roads around Aberdeen as “rat runs”, I find disturbing the suggestion in local press that William Walton, chairman of campaign group RoadSense, might be the most hated man in Scotland over his continued opposition to the proposed route of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

Should we also therefore reserve some “hatred” for those couples who live outwith Aberdeen yet use separate cars to get to work in the city because to do otherwise they find an inconvenience yet by doing so they are contributing greatly to the traffic volume in and around the city?

Of course not, as it is their choice, even if their actions might be construed by some as wholly inconsiderate It just so happens it is Mr Walton’s choice to continue to oppose the route of the AWPR.

Have we become so obsessed with the use of the motor car that we begin to use words like “hated” in connection with someone who has objected to the proposed route of what after all is an inanimate object? Has the psychic of Scottish society really become this skewed?
