Signal failure

I totally agree with the Friends of The Scotsman (9 October), which points out that so much more can be done to boost Scotland’s tourism industry, and from my own very limited experience I would completely endorse the potential of ancestor-tourism.

However, there are other things that can be done first, and easily.

Better communication and signposting in Edinburgh would be a start. I have been
approached dozens of times by visitors to the city in the Stockbridge area asking how to get to the Botanics.

A prominent sign on the outward going side of Raeburn Place between the Stockbridge Tap and Hectors, just at the vennel, would be one small, cheap improvement. Some tourists prefer to walk, and not take the bus to Inverleith. I could identify other, less permanent, problems but the key point is that if Edinburgh (and I can speak only for my city) thought just a little, the visitor experience could be greatly enhanced.
