Shameful display

A few weeks ago there was considerable coverage of the Home Office’s poster campaign putting pressure on asylum seekers to “go home”.

This scheme, like the poll tax, also piloted in Scotland, attracted justifiable condemnation from refugee organisations, churches, politicians of different parties and a number of concerned individuals.

On Monday at the Liberal Democrat conference it was condemned by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. Yet I have seen a letter from the Home Office indicating that this pilot will not be ended until 4 October.

Have these grotesque posters been removed by now from Glasgow’s Reporting Centre in Brand Street? The public, who have no access to the centre, have a right to know. Does even the leader of the Lib Dem part of the government have no influence on the Home Office over its action in the city where his party is meeting?

I wrote to my MP several weeks ago, asking him to make representations to the UK government and would urge others to do the same and ensure that we have no more of these disgraceful and threatening posters displayed in Scotland or any other part of Britain.

The speech of the increasingly tedious Business Secretary Vince Cable the other day, accusing the Conservatives of “reverting to type”, was not that of a good coalition partner. Perhaps it is the Lib Dems who are reverting to type, ie the silly/irresponsible party.
