Sex education

I AGREE: sex education should not be “just a biology lesson, but a life lesson” (Leader, 2 November).

Many call for wider relationship education, but what exactly should be taught? The vast majority of responses to this question basically boil down to “don’t have sex unless you really feel like it”. And that is the disastrous message preached to many, if not most, schoolchildren in Scotland.

Instead, I commend an
evidence-based approach that does not sweep under the carpet the mountain of statistics that demonstrates the positive outcomes correlating with reserving sexual relations and cohabitation for marriage. Young people should know the facts.

But suggest that in most schools and you may as well be speaking a foreign language.
