Second chamber

In his sensible letter on Lords reform (22 May), Mr John Dorward had one major error.

The last thing we need in a reformed upper chamber is for it to be elected. We must have an independent chamber with no connection to the political parties of the Commons.

Ireland is a useful example. Its Senate is not elected, and each member represents an “occupational constituency”.
