Scottish teachers vote in favour of strike action

I cannot imagine that most teachers would be physically able to cope with the demands of teaching at the age of 68.

This is beginning to look like a welcome meeting of minds between the EIS teaching union and the Scottish Government. Moving beyond ideology to common concerns over pension, paperwork, workload and retirement age.

If you acted and looked more like a profession – setting standards, weeding out poor performers – you would have less to fear and more influence.

Well, I worked until 72 and was glad to, though I admit that for the last five years or so it was part-time. Now 74, I would be happy if someone offered me more part-time work. Stop at 65 just means a smaller pension than at 68 – join the real world teachers!

The unions need to get a
grip, the rest of us cannot afford your lavish retirement.

Teachers should face mandatory retirement at 50, get younger more agile brains in to do the job. I will have to work till I’m 68, but why should teachers?

Poor teachers. Most people in the private sector are going to have to work (at least part-time) until they drop to have enough money to live on. Retirement will be a luxury that only a few will be able to enjoy.

Teachers are on their feet most of the day, it’s a physically and mentally demanding job. I’m not saying there’s not harder jobs out there, but if they’ve no longer got the energy to present a good lesson, it’s our young people’s education that will suffer.
