Scottish studies

Your article (30 September) on the proposal of the Scottish Parliament to have “Vote Scottish Nationalist Party Studies” – sorry, Scottish Studies – taught in schools, outlined misgivings of the teaching profession and school administrators, based on the fact that the current curriculum is already under severe time pressure. They believe that the new course of studies will crowd out other essential lessons.

I have come up with a revolutionary wheeze which could help: why don’t we invite our children to go to school on Friday afternoons, just like in the rest of the UK and Europe? It hits two birds with one stone: our children would receive, at last, the key knowledge of their history and culture that they currently lack, and, on a Friday afternoon, the St James’ Centre in Edinburgh would become safe for pensioners again.
