Scotsman Archive: Scots may yet take part in World Cup Series April 17 1950

Scotland lost to England by the only goal of the match in the international at Hampden Stadium on Saturday, a defeat that upset our chances of making an appearance in the World Cup series at Rio de Janeiro. But will the Scots be absent?

There is a strong body of opinion that a world competition without Scottish representation would be incomplete; and it has influential support, despite official statements that we would only participate as British champions. A draw at Hampden would have established that position. Strong pressure is being exerted to get the Scottish selectors to change their decision, with Sir Stanley Rous, the secretary of the English FA, among those who have made an appeal for reconsideration. A special invitation from the Brazil FA was received before the Hampden match, urging Scotland to contest the World Cup finals whether beaten by England or not. It is understood that some of the committee including Mr John Lamb, the Scottish FA president, favour sending a Scottish team.
