Scotsman Archive: Fruit Shortages 27 February, 1946

Considerable quantities of fruit and vegetables will be available from Holland anid France this year, it was stated at the Ministry of Food's weekly press conference yesterday, but the public should not expect appreciable quantities of imported fresh soft fruits in the shops.

These are likely to be in short supply as the Ministry has decided it must pre-empt soft fruit – particularly black currants, raspberries, and strawberries – for jam-making. Fruits to be imported freely throughout the year include cherries, apricots, black, white and red currants; gooseberries, green figs, nectarines peaches, pears raspberries and strawberries.

The Wholesale Grocers' Association of Scotland understands the quantities of prunes and figs available are small, compared with the total allocation of dried fruits, the bulk of which will consist of raisins.

With 66,000 tons of tomatoes expected from Holland and the Channel Islands between May and October, as well as the home crop, supplies should be-plentiful during summer and autumn.
