Scotsman Archive: American ruling about whisky 25 June, 1959

AMERICAN distillers can make "Scotch type" whisky, but only Scotland can produce "Scotch", the US Internal Revenue Bureau ruled today.

The decision was issued after eight months of weighing arguments advanced by US distillers and importers at public hearings. The distillers here claimed their "Scotch type" was just as good as any imported brand, and they should be allowed to label it "Scotch whisky produced in the United States". The bureau took no action on the plea that foreign whisky should be labelled in accordance with American labelling regulations. Other rulings resulting from the hearing included: labels of imported liquors must specify the place of origin, except where it is clearly shown, as in the case of "Irish" or "Scotch" whisky. Where US producers make a "Scotch type" whisky it must follow a definite standard to ensure production methods will be close to those used in Scotland.
