LONDON STREET ATTACK 4 FEBRUARY, 1950

Three men who drove up in a stolen car attacked Sir Francis Grant, Bt of Monymusk , and his mother, the Dowager Lady Grant, in Pelham Crescent, South Kensington, late on Thursday night. They were walking in Pelham Street when the men jumped from the car and attacked them. Sir Francis and his mother were not seriously injured. The car, thought to have been stolen from Clapham Junction, was found abandoned in the Lavender Hill district. Sir Francis said: "The two men came on us quite suddenly, and one of them hit me on the jaw. I hit back, and knocked his hat off, and was able to get a good look. He was a soft-faced looking chap about my own size. My mother was absolutely marvellous. While I fought with one man she was being dragged across the road by the strap of her handbag. But she beat the chap about the head with her umbrella and shouted 'Police'."

Lady Grant, 65, said that she was far too busy driving the men off to note their appearance, but they were ordinary looking people.
