PUBLIC DOCUMENTS OF SCOTLAND AND USA 9 February, 1950

THE generous interest that America takes in Scotland, of which we had a specimen some years ago when the American Library Association presented the nation with 1,000 books published in the States during the war, is again manifested in the arrangements which have now been made for an exchange of the official publications of the two countries. The Library of Congress, Washington (which may be described as combining the functions of the libraries of the Houses of Lords and Commons and the British Museum) has asked the National Library of Scotland to obtain for it the minutes, reports, etc, of the Scottish County Councils, the corporations of the larger cities and other public bodies. In return, the National Library of Scotland has been made a library of deposit for partial sets of public documents of the United States. Scotland will receive from 1,000 to 1,500 items a year, issued by 19 departments and their subsidiary-services and covering the whole range of the activities of the US government.
