SCOTTISH POWER SCHEMES 18 FEBRUARY, 1950

The highest tunnel in the Loch Sloy hydroelectric scheme so far was completed yesterday, when Mrs Victor Warren, wife of the Lord Provost of Glasgow, pressed the switch which touched off the blast to break through the one and a quarter mile long Glen Falloch tunnel at the head of Loch Lomond. The tunnel, which is 1,050 feet above the level of Loch Lomond, has taken 21 months to complete and has been driven through solid rock and granite. One hundred and forty pounds of gelignite were packed into the face of the rock for yesterday's final blast, the roar of which thundered through Glen Falloch about ten seconds after Mrs Warren had pressed the switch. The ceremony was held in drenching rain at the mouth of the tunnel. Afterwards the party rode on a little funicular railway 100 feet below the summit of Ben Damhain. The journey, which took about 15 minutes, was an eerie one and only here and there were the little electric bulbs which line the route, visible through the smoke which shrouded the tunnel.
