The thaw fails, March 12 1947

Indications that the thaw would spread throughout Scotland yesterday did not materialise. Indeed, in several areas there was a return of the blizzard, while in others there was a heavy fall of snow. In the North of Scotland fresh blizzards created new difficulties. The main road south from Caithness was again blocked and remained closed until yesterday afternoon, when snow ploughs were able to make their way through. In Sutherland, fresh drifts prevented mail and passenger buses from getting through from the west coast to Lairg. In the Shetlands, roads are still impassable and almost daily use is being made of the Lerwick lifeboat for ambulance purposes. A fresh coating of snow about three inches deep covered central Angus, and roads were rendered more difficult than ever. Plans were being made to drop fodder to 500 sheep at Hunthill, Glen Lethnot. Farmers in Sutherland are having difficulty in transporting supplies of hay to keep sheep and stock alive. Many sheep are buried on the hills.
