Health Service estimates, 25 March, 1950

THE National Health Service will cost 34,405,450 more in 1950-51 than in the current financial year. The total bill will be 392,935,000, including 351,541,000 (or 33,667,750 more) for England and Wales, and 41,394,000 (757,700 more) for Scotland.

These figures are given in estimates, published yesterday, totalling 845,683,199 for health, housing, town planning, labour, national insurance and contributions to local revenue. There is an increase of 18,047,000 in hospital, specialist and ancillary services; but a decrease of 1,738,300, of which 1,047,000 is in respect of services in Scotland, in general dental, pharmaceutical and supplementary ophthalmic services. Estimates of 41,394,000 for the Scottish NHS include 31,986,000 for hospital, specialist and ancillary services (3,225,000 more); 1,350,000 for local health authorities' services (250,000 more); and 16,402,000 for general medical, dental, pharmaceutical and supplementary ophthalmic services ( 1,047,000 less.)
