Difference in dialects 5 May, 1950

It would appear that geographical dialect is becoming functional dialect, said Mr Hans J Uldall, lecturer in the English-Language and Linguistics Department of Edinburgh University when he addressed Dundee Rotary Club. Perhaps the Scottish dialect would one day take its place in the hierarchy. Referring to the linguistic survey of Scotland being undertaken, he said those making the research were not interested only in the queer words, the odd bits of speech, or uncouth Scotticisms. They were trying to present a picture of how people actually spoke in Scotland. That which was "ordinary English" was of equal interest with that which was odd and peculiar and not to be found anywhere else. The Scottish survey was part of a drive to find out what made Scotland tick and what they had contributed to civilisation. The people of Scotland were not only multilinguistical; they were multi-cultural.
