MORE WHALES SEEN AT THORNTONLOCH, 21 May, 1950

ANOTHER large school of whales was seen off Dunbar yesterday afternoon, within a mile of Thorntonloch bay, where 147 pilot whales were stranded on Saturday. By nightfall, however, they had moved on. Last night only 28 of the 147 lay on the beach. Lorries and cranes worked all day removing the carcases, and it is hoped that the remainder will be removed by midday to-day. The carcases, with the exception of those to be dissected by museums and other bodies, have been accepted by pig-breeders and firms in different parts of the country which deal in the dead bodies of animals. Replying to the criticism that the whales, while alive, should have been pulled down to the sea, and been given an opportunity of swimming away, Mr Thomas Gibb, County Clerk of East Lothian, said that this was tried with some of the smaller whales, which were pulled to the sea. They would not leave their parents.
