SCOTTISH NATIONAL ORCHESTRA, 27 MAY 1950

The committee appointed to consider the orchestral situation in Edinburgh agreed at a meeting yesterday to the establishment, with reservations and safeguards, of a Scottish National Orchestra as a single unit. The decision follows negotiations with orchestral interests in the West of Scotland by a sub-committee. The proposal of the Edinburgh committee was for a dual scheme – an orchestra of two units, the larger based in Glasgow and the smaller in Edinburgh. This has not proved acceptable to Glasgow orchestral interests. In submitting the report of the sub-committee, Lord Provost Sir Andrew Murray said: "Many meetings have taken place, but considerable difficulty was found in coming to agreement with the major orchestral interests in Glasgow. While they do not deny the desirability of certain features of the scheme, are equally satisfied in their own minds that the scheme is impracticable."
