LIKE 'WHISKY GALORE', June 1950

SCENES reminiscent of the film Whisky Galore were witnessed in Lerwick during the 'dry' periods on the island, said Mr J G Morrison, secretary of the town's Local Veto Defence Association, when he spoke in Edinburgh yesterday. "What a scene for visitors. It developed into street corner drinking. Numerous clubs sprang; up where uncontrolled drinking could be carried on for 24 hours, Sundays included. It was just like the film Whisky Galore. People went down to the quay and the question was – always: 'Anything in the boat to-day?'". Mr Morrison, speaking at the annual meeting of the Scottish Licensed Trade Veto Defence Fund, criticised the Temperance (Scotland) Act. It had been hanging too long over Scotland. The quicker it was removed, the better. Mr George Veitch, managing director of the North British Distillery Co., said the Act was foisted upon Scotland by a British Parliament. If anything would compel you to sign the National Covenant, it would be this."
