School ties

Malcolm Parkin (Letters, 18 May) was clearly upset by my letter regarding the private education enjoyed by Messrs Cameron and Clegg, so much so that he has missed the point I was trying to make. Having once taught in a fee-paying school myself, I have nothing against such institutions.

I merely suggested that politicians from a privileged background may have little or no first-hand experience of unemployment, social deprivation, crime and low-achieving schools, and find it less easy to understand and deal with these problems.

As for the cheap socialist jibe, I am no more a socialist than Mr Parkin.
