School of life

David Fiddimore jokes that Edinburgh schoolchildren should give up their free Friday afternoons in order to fit Scottish Studies into their timetables (Letters, 3 October). Reading some of the articles in Monday’s paper, I feel that even more drastic measures are called for.

The Royal Horticultural Society wants gardening lessons in schools. The Law Society of Scotland wants to see the teaching of law in our secondary schools. Next week, I expect a spokesperson for some other vested interest will come up with another “must have” addition to the curriculum.

Why don’t we just bite the bullet and open the schools on Saturdays and Sundays too?

More overtime pay for the jannies, and anyway kids don’t need two whole days off every week, do they?
