Safety in mind

Stephen Chaffey (Platform, 17 June) suggests the proposed Young review may dispel "some of the myths about health and safety's status as a byword for excessive caution and restriction".

The excessive caution and restriction is not a myth. It is the reality many of us experience every day and is now embedded in our culture. The challenge for the Young review is to identify the principles and legislation which benefit us and those which do not – taking into account the far-reaching effect of legislation on culture, behaviour and perceptions.

Then the volume and complexity of health-and-safety legislation should be significantly reduced.
