A sad postscript

In 1953 a first class stamp cost 1p and could be used on any size of envelope up to a certain weight. There were two deliveries per working day, and if the recipient’s address was close to the point of posting, a letter posted early in the morning might well be delivered in the afternoon.

Today, a first class stamp costs 60p for use on an envelope up to a certain size, and 90p or more for larger envelopes. There is only one delivery per working day.

The price increase is three times the official rate of inflation, and the service is greatly inferior.

Moreover, post offices have been closed in rural areas all over Scotland, especially in the islands and Highlands, yet First Minister Alex Salmond intends to re-nationalise the Royal Mail if the Scots are foolish enough to vote for independence next year.
