Sacking offence

Perhaps some of the Scottish shoppers who use a “staggering 750 million disposable carrier bags a year” (your report, 19 July) frequent a local convenience store like mine where the person on the till packs your shopping into a branded plastic carrier bag whether you want them to or not.

I usually find that even banging my canvas shopping bag down on the counter, as proof of my green credentials, fails to halt the robotic loading of the items into a plastic bag I have
neither asked for nor want, and Churchillian selective deafness greets my protests.

If these things are going to cost 5p a shot in future I shall have to make my protests a bit more shrill.
