Rural GPs

I note that NHS Highland is having difficulty recruiting doctors to serve in remote areas (your report, 30 June).

My late husband Dr John Patterson and I spent three happy and formative, indeed career-enhancing, years on the Orkney island of Westray from 1958 to 1961.

We had no electricity nor a gravitational water supply, but we were made very welcome by the 900 local people.

My husband believed his chest measurement had increased by half an inch thanks to daily pumping of water.
