Ruling the roost

Steuart Campbell (Letters, 6 January) misses the point with his assertion that “if an independent Scotland retains the British monarch as its monarch, then it becomes a dominion of the British Commonwealth” in that following the dissolution of the 1707 union there will be no British monarchy.

There will once again be two separate kingdoms sharing the same monarch – a situation that prevailed for 104 years from the 1603 union of the crowns. Should Elizabeth still be Queen, she will be styled Elizabeth I in Scotland and in the event of her grandson becoming king, he will be styled William IV in Scotland and V in England.
