Rubbish design

The letters this week regarding the seemingly increasing amounts of litter on our streets remind me of an issue I’ve noticed around the capital for some time.

Having litter bins beside city bus stops, and other busy public places, is supposed to help reduce the amount of litter dropped by members of the public.

I do wish, however, that the city council would review the design of these bins. Many of them have the equivalent of an ashtray on the top and during breezy days cigarette ends waft by the thousand on to our city streets.

There must surely be an alternative design of bin which would lead smokers to dispense their litter inside the bins. It’s a minor point perhaps, but it’s often the smaller ideas that help to improve things.
