Royal symbolism

Ronald MacLean (Letters, 8 July) and Colin McAllister (Letters, 9 July) are concerned about royal numerals. Interestingly, the new aircraft carrier has been named HMS Queen Elizabeth with no numeral.

I recall the fuss in the 1950s when the new Queen was announced as Elizabeth II. This was included in graffiti on walls in Glasgow – mostly “EIR” or “EIIR” – but I observed one attempt at compromise with “E I ½ R”.

Participants in the referendum debate and decision will give varying importance to humour and symbolism.
