Royal mix up

The Scotsman’s editorial (26
February) tells us that the old Royal High School “was refurbished as the intended home of the Scottish Assembly in anticipation of a Labour victory in the 1992 general election”.

This would get no marks in a history exam. The school was indeed refurbished for the proposed Scottish Assembly.

That was, however, in order to be ready for the establishment of an Assembly in the event of the 1979 referendum producing a vote in favour of the devolution scheme set out in the Scotland Act 1978.

As we all know, that scheme fell thanks to the 40 per cent rule – but that’s another story.
