Roads into work

Peter Jones’s arguments (“Jobless young crying out for a future”, Perspective, 24 April) are all valid and important.

We all know that youth unemployment has become a monumental problem affecting more than one generation and we are starting to understand the long-term psychological impacts of youth unemployment.

It’s now time to ask what can be done to fix it. If the number of jobseekers is far outweighing the number of jobs on offer, then surely something has to give?

Unemployment is tough at any age, however, we do need to make room to allow younger generations into our industries. We need to entice employers to understand what high-value apprenticeship programmes can really deliver and then sell them to young people as an attractive way into work and ultimately long-term employment.
