Road safety

There is an increasing demand that the roads be made safer for cyclists, and rightly so. Of course, we should aspire to the superb safe conditions that cyclists enjoy in Denmark and the Netherlands, for example.

So, here’s the deal: cyclists must wear a high-viz vest and display effective lights. Then the hotshots in black lycra will be easier to see. They should also keep single file in built-up areas. All roadway users (where not on a footpath) joggers, mobility scooters, equestrians, walkers etc must likewise wear high-viz clothing. Also, those on foot, should be facing oncoming traffic.

The quid pro quo is that all motor vehicles will display dipped headlights at all times. These measures will then oblige the police to stop and caution/charge those – in cars and out of them – who terrify the rest of us by their stupidity.
