Red sky at night

YOU report (19 March) that the recent display of the aurora borealis is the best in living memory. I would beg to differ.

During the International Geophysical Year – July 1958 till December 1958 – I was a meteorological observer at Royal Air Force Leuchars in Fife.

My duties at that time included recording any appearance of aurora.

One night there was an unforgettable, and rather eerie, display, mostly a deep red, when the aurora extended overhead and all the way to the southern horizon.

Even weather stations in the south of France were reporting this spectacular event.
