Recession blame

Far from saving Scotland from economic meltdown, as Dr Alan Brown claims (Letters, 29 October), the UK government was the cause of boom and bust as it intervened in the credit supply by means of a central bank, the classic cause of boom and bust cycles.

The government compounded this by rewarding failure in the form of bailouts for failed banks and further punished success with high taxes, the threat of a “windfall tax” and a heavy burden of regulation which led to a long and deep recession.

The UK government was catastrophic for Scotland in this matter but then it was also catastrophic for the rest of the UK.
