Really reconciled

While heartily applauding your call for a secular constitution
in an independent Scotland, (Leader, 21 May) I am surprised
at your support for the Kirk’s
suggestion of a reconciliation service post-referendum.

The Kirk is currently tearing
itself in two over the sexual orientation of ministers, and has now been revealed this week to have sexism problems, with its own Moderator apparently denied access to some of her pulpits to preach.

In addition, the Free Church has seized upon the Kirk’s problems to sneer at its version of Christianity and play a nursery playground game of my faith is better than yours. And this from an organisation that suffered fractious fallout itself over changes to how it sang praise in its churches.

Might I suggest there is a more immediate need for a service of reconciliation within the Kirk itself, and between the Free Church and the Kirk?

What message of reconciliation is the Protestant faith setting out for others to follow? Is it perhaps another case of religious leaders telling us “don’t do as we do, do as we say?”
