A councillor's snow suggestion gets a frosty response from our onliners, while the city pay row has divided opinion

Councillor Norman Work's caused a snow storm by suggesting anyone under the age of 90 is lazy if they don't help clear pavements.

Norman Work, I have no confidence in your ability to function as a councillor and call on your resignation. I am a council taxpayer like many other people of Edinburgh. I work long hours and don't have the luxury of time to do the job that the council should be doing. After all that is what we pay council tax for.

All road and footways that are adopted are the responsibility of the council to ensure that they are clear of snow and ice. THAT IS WHY WE PAY SO MUCH COUNCIL TAX. If the resident clears it and somebody gets hurt, then the resident can be sued. Edinburgh Council really do amaze me . . .

Perhaps Mr Work needs to consider that many of us have jobs of our own that we need to get to, and by the time public transport crawls us back home at night, it's far too dark to go walking the streets looking for empty grit bins. I'm sure the Edinburgh residents would gladly do their bit, if they got a council tax rebate for doing a council function.

Ok, Councillor Work, you can come out from behind the sofa now . . .

Well done Councillor Work. It's about time the lazy workshy got off their subsidised backsides and did some work.

First thing we did on the first day of heavy snow was to clear the GP surgery pavement and path up the road. You need to do it with a shovel and some elbow grease, and only put down grit when it's cleared. Asking the council to grit the compacted snow on pavements now is utter stupidity, since it won't do any good. Just because we haven't had this kind of snow for a few years, people seem to have become completely incapable of coping with it. It's pathetic.

He's right. We should be clearing our paths and the pavement outside our house, and shop-owners should clear their patch.

Just when the council thought it could take the dart from its neck, another was fired in. Staff have been told to accept the new pay offer or face the sack.

You won't hear the managers and bigwigs complaining about modernising pay, most of them are being green-circled, which means a rise. No, it's the minions that get screwed over as usual.

It's not just bin men and manual workers etc – all-night residential staff in children's services will be losing over 4,000 per year in salary for doing the exact same hours in what can often be a very difficult job. We have spent years trying to recruit experienced and qualified staff and for what? To be told that in fact they are not worth a reasonable wage.

And on the other side . . .

Well said the council, if they ain't happy sack them, plenty people are looking for work.

Everybody has to share the pain of the recession. Some public sector workers need to take a reality check!
