A refloated redevelopment plan based on borrowed money, a swastika-waving football fan and a cancelled gig, all here

The city council's plan to borrow 84 million to help fund the resumption of the massive redevelopment of Edinburgh's Waterfront brought in an avalanche of online comments. Here's a selection...

I do not see why private developers should not borrow on their own account. If and when their development gets underway, then the council can borrow to repay whatever is considered appropriate. For example, if it is necessary to build a small area of housing, why can't the developers borrow to cover the whole cost, including roads, etc, for that area, with the Council paying the developers back over a period of time? In that way, the major part of the risk would be borne by the developer and the Council would not be incurring debt and costs on developments which may not actually happen.

Might be nice if they dug their way out of the mound of debt that already exists before borrowing yet more of it to pour down the drain.

Had the planners been a bit more decisive and supportive the development of Leith Docks would be well under way by now, but they have spent the last ten years humming and hawing and contemplating their navel.

Now they come up with the great Lib Dem way forward - chuck money at it and hope for the best. Here we go again...

Refloat waterfront? Sink it.

Where are they going to borrow 84m? Ocean Direct?

And so on and so forth. There were a few backers for the idea, but the vast weight of online opinion was against it. This story, as they say, will run and run.

Elsewhere, the fan cautioned for waving an 8ft swastika at a junior football match got short shrift too.

What the hell is it about football that it seems to attract those who cannot see sport as healthy competition but constantly brings out the worst in people?

Flying a massive swastika is offensive to the memory of thousands who died fighting to stop the Nazi tyranny. The guy might as well have spat on a war memorial. There could well have been old guys at the game who fought in the war. My dad who is 86 served in the Arctic convoys and in Normandy. He came from very near Bo'ness and I wish he could take this moron down to the war memorial and point out the names of guys he was at school with, who never came back.

Were you one of the unlucky Ocean Colour Scene fans who were looking forward to their gig on Tuesday night, only for it to get called off at the last minute when a fuse went at the substation, plunged the venue into darkness? Then you might wish to look away now, as you'll find little in the way of sympathy here.

Just as well. Terrible music!

Well done Scottish Power.
