A man finds a gun hidden under a tree while walking his dog and councillors plan a trip to study Swedish schools

A dog walker found a sawn-off shotgun in some undergrowth near Silverknowes Golf Course.

Cammy Day – "Its very worrying that we're finding guns and knives scattered around the place". GUN Mr Day, GUN > singular, you make it sound like you'd have to wade through them to get to the shops!

Who'd be a dog walker? They seem to always find murder victims, knives, abandoned babies, burnt out motorbikes, guns, etc.

korndog

Let's hope this is not common practice from the neds of the underworld and just someone dumping it.

The Real Alfonsa Pedrosa

Yes dog walkers do seem to see things that others, namely the police, miss. Like youths out of their heads on drugs, vandalism etc. Maybe the police should start walking their dogs as well.

Mrs Broon

I think what they are trying to say is that this is not the first gun or knife that has been found in Edinburgh. Just because they don't often make the news doesn't mean they don't exist.

ME!!

I don't see what the police could have done in this instance. Yes, there are youths out of their heads on drugs and the chances are, a lot of them will have been arrested at some point but at the end of the day, it's the courts who have the final say whether or not they get locked up. Taking a shot at the police wasn't called for in my opinion.

You feel that education bosses are wasting taxpayers' money on a fact-finding mission to Sweden.

Surely in these days of the internet and video conferencing these types of fact finding trips are no longer necessary – just an excuse for a freebie junket in Stockholm.

Nitpicking

Any chance of me tagging along on this junket? I'd really like to study the way the Swedes lay the tarmac in the school playground.

Get rid of this mob now!! This has to be worst council Edinburgh has suffered. They are not fit for purpose. Dump them at the polls. How dare they waste my money like this? CHANCERS and SCROUNGERS!

I think this is an excellent idea but would like to suggest that we taxpayers fund a one-way ticket only, and then hope that the volcanic dust cloud settles over Sweden for a couple of years. This I am sure would yield a highly cost-effective result for local education.

The full cost is 3,300.

Learning and teaching Scotland would be better spending their money on something useful.

With the proposed cuts there may not be the number of teachers to teach the new methods.

But they can get another junket to find alternative methods if it cannot be implemented.

I don't find this shocking any more . . . it's becoming the norm.

abner doubleday

Surely there are academic studies of the Swedish schools system? These councillors could study these instead of heading out on a jolly. Any questions could be dealt with by e-mail. It's time we cancelled all councillor trips outwith Edinburgh.
