Dr James Simpson (Letters, 2 December) seems to contradict himself in several respects in his spurious arguments against the Raeburn Place development proposals.

He sneers at “individuals” who run a “private rugby club”, while at the same time pointing out that it is no longer a closed former pupils’ club, but open to anyone, especially youngsters from many north Edinburgh schools.

He further expresses shock at any building on playing fields, seemingly unaware that virtually every playing field has changing rooms and spectator facilities.

Indeed, it is underneath such necessary buildings that the proposed shop units are planned, the rental income from which is needed to help finance the sporting facilities.

And the “predicament” to which Dr Simpson refers was undoubtedly exacerbated by the delays caused by his “suffering” community who opposed the plans to build a new clubhouse on Portgower Place ten years ago, which consequently fell through. Be careful what you wish for!

I would also point out that there is no question of the Accies development “compromising the view from Inverleith Park”, and note that Dr Simpson does not mention the newly extended Raeburn House Hotel on the same site, which does no credit to a conservation area.

We expect considerable support for the proposals at tonight’s EGM of the EA Club.
