Radium rot
SPENDING £10 million to remove a few radioactive particles from a beach at Dalgety Bay? The particles come from radium used to make aircraft instruments luminous in the dark and dumped there after the war.
However, radium is present in the ground naturally, adding to background radiation. It’s doubtful these particles have added to this background.
So far as we know, no-one has been harmed by these particles at Dalgety Bay, nor by those at Sandside Bay near Dounreay. Is it worth spending £10m on removing a perceived hazard that has harmed no-one and is unlikely ever to do so?
