Racist attitudes

So Mr Hugh Kerr (Letters, 24 March) has “not encountered
racist attitudes towards the English in any Scottish political parties, in particular in the SNP”.

What planet, pray, does Mr Kerr live on? The dictionary definition of racism is “prejudice, discrimination or antagonism against someone of a different race, based on the belief that one’s own race is superior”.

I think the noun “racism” pretty well defines Alex Salmond’s attitude towards the English. Firstly, there is his oft-quoted belief that only the Scots on their own can achieve proper “social justice” and “fairness” in Scotland (what patronising rot).

Secondly, there is his constant sneering towards English politicians, in sound bites such as “Tory toffs”, “little George Osborne”, “the Westminster establishment” and “the three amigos”.

Of course, one should never underestimate Mr Salmond’s long game which is to insult the English so that there comes a time when even the famously tolerant English just declare that enough is enough.

This really is and has been his game plan – if you insult the English enough, it will be England that declares itself to be independent of Scotland – mission accomplished. Let’s just hope that there are enough people living in Scotland who can see through Mr Salmond’s scheme – before it is too late.
