Quota restriction

The Scottish Government is proposing that the UK Government introduce mandatory quotas to ensure that more women are appointed to public boards, based on the number of women in the population.

There is no more public a board than parliament, yet there appears to be no suggestion that selection of candidates for election to parliament be governed by quotas on gender, colour, creed nor sexual orientation which, if introduced, would produce some spectacular changes in the make-up of Scottish politics at local and national level, most obviously at Holyrood.

Equality, by definition, must apply to all, including and particularly those most involved in legislation.

Would you want your heart surgeon, brain surgeon or airline pilot – woman or man – to have been selected on gender balance basis or because they were the best person for the job?
