Inviting us to view the Scottish Conservatives “with an objective eye”, Brian Monteith (1 December) praises the contribution of a certain “Tom Strathclyde” to the cause of Scotland’s self-
government. Dropping Lord Tom’s true title fools nobody.

The Tories ran short of qualified players some time ago, and so were forced to field substitutes drawn from the ranks of the hereditary aristocracy.
