Quaint honour

I was wonderful to see photographs of Andy Murray being moved to tears after being given the Freedom of Stirling (your report, 24 April). This successful tennis player works extremely hard and is a good role model for other young Scots.

But what I find really fascinating is how much being given the “freedom of a city” means to people – both those who receive it and those who witness it.

While it means nothing in real terms, this ancient honour seems to have a great deal of sentimental value, and I find that very touching.
