Put buses first

WHATEVER the outcome of the trams debacle (Letters, 6 September), Lothian Buses must not be penalised.

The company provides an excellent service and needs its income to invest in maintenance and renewal of its fleet, and for more real-time information at bus-stops, and not to subsidise loss-making trams.

I have yet to find anyone other than councillors who wanted the trams.

“SCOTLAND a laughing stock”? Nonsense! It’s certain Scottish politicians who are a laughing stock. This is because nobody I know has ever supported the trams.

That’s why the councillors didn’t hold a referendum. That’s why, instead of looking at the actual practical way we citizens get from A to B, politicians spout empty abstractions: “integrated thinking”, “environmental efficiency”, “vision, clarity of purpose”!

I don’t believe the trams will ever happen.

However, if they do, we shall not ever be using them because 1: They don’t go where we go; 2: They won’t be free to retired people;

3: We shall boycott them as a matter of principle.

Why are the citizens of Edinburgh so passive? Rise up and kick out this mockery of a city council!

I USED to live in Croydon, Surrey, and the tram system there was put in by a company called Alexander Gibb, which I believe was a Scottish company which moved its headquarters from Edinburgh to Reading during a recession.

Surely a company such as Gibb’s should have been asked to put in Edinburgh’s trams, since the system in Croydon is running successfully?

Perhaps some young graduates could advise Edinburgh City Council on getting the job done?
