Puffed out

Dennis Grattan (Letters, 12 August) commends the organisers of next year’s Commonwealth Games for banning smoking at the venues since he feels that smoking is incompatible with health and sport.

This is all very well but they are to provide a smoking area in the accommodation for – of all people – athletes!

What sort of message is this sending out? Do some athletes like to relax with a smoke? Would some be reluctant to take part in the Games if they couldn’t get a fag? I think we should be told.
