Progressive conservatism

In his article (Opinion, 18 January), George Kerevan suggests the Scottish Tories should change their name to the "Scottish Progressives".

Up until the late 1960s, elections for the four Scottish city corporations were fought by the Progressives. No-one was fooled. They used the same committee rooms and canvassers in local elections as were used by the Conservatives in general elections.

By abandoning their Progressive label, Scots Tories signed their own extinction warrant.
