Premium rates

What on earth is the European Union about (in its ruling preventing insurance companies from making young men pay more for motor insurance, your report, 22 January)?

Women’s car insurance was based on the risk factor as viewed by the various insurance companies, just as a young driver is seen as a
higher risk, and has a much higher premium, or we older drivers covering fewer miles can expect a lower premium.

Basically, there are many different factors governing premiums. There is no reason to say that women drivers should be paying any more than they have been.

We’re all paying, depending on what risk the insurers calculate.
